About Health Savings Accounts
A Health Savings Account (HSA) is a tax-exempt trust or custodial account you set up with a qualified HSA trustee to pay or reimburse certain medical expenses you incur. You must be an eligible individual to qualify for an HSA.
Annual Contribution Levels for HSAs
HSA Contribution Limits 2023: For 2023, the Internal Revenue Service raised the maximum contribution to HSAs by $200 to $3,850 for individuals and $350 to $7,750 for families.
Maximum catch-up contributions for people over age 55 remain at $1,000.
Individuals who are eligible on the first day of the last month of the taxable year (typically December) are allowed the full annual contribution regardless of their previous months of eligibility. If an individual is no longer eligible on that date, both the HSA contribution and catch-up contribution apply based on the taxpayer’s number of eligible months that year.
