A tale of two halves – A look at 2021 so far, and what’s next.

Recently, our Nutmeg employees from across the state gathered on the patio of our Rocky Hill headquarters for a “Summer Social” and an update on the year. It was wonderful to see those smiling faces interacting with each other for the first time in over a year. I raised a glass to our terrific Nutmeg colleagues who worked tirelessly through this once in a lifetime (hopefully!) pandemic.

I’m happy to share some of the highlights with you.

What is one word we would use to describe the first half of 2021?


Consumer confidence is up and members are spending in force, as noted in our increased credit card interactions. With interest rates at near-record lows, we’ve seen an enormous increase in loan activity as well. Our lending team has worked incredibly hard to get you the right loan as quickly and as seamlessly as possible.

And as workplaces navigate returning to the office- with or without flip-flops and sweatpants policies in place- Nutmeg has remained nimble. We are pleased to be able to offer a “hybrid” work model for applicable Nutmeg teammates, while keeping the health of our members and colleagues at the forefront of all we do. Work flexibility and health and safety can and will intermingle for the betterment of our community.

What gets you excited about the 2nd half of 2021?

Lending, lending, lending!

During the height of the pandemic, Nutmeg was honored to be able to provide relief to hundreds of businesses in need of PPP loans. Since the beginning of 2021, expanded business relationships coupled with Nutmeg’s strong word-of-mouth reputation among businesses have grown our commercial portfolio to $82Million. That’s an increase of over 24% year over year, and that’s not just PPP!

We continue to focus on technology, and the value it brings to you our members in the community. Whether it’s our partnerships with the DMV and AAA or a streamlined mortgage application process (thanks Mortgage Markets!), we are poised to take on the digital age and to make technology easier, smarter, and more intuitive for our members and our communities.

Finally, happiness… for our members and employees. Nutmeg created a new group of colleagues known as TSS- Teammate Success Services. They will guide, inspire, and professionally develop our incredible colleagues while honoring their hard work and dedication. Happiness is contagious, and when your employees are not just satisfied with their careers, but happy and engaged, it inspires success and a greater experience for both our employees and our members!
