Deposit Insurance

The Long Version: The National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF) was created by Congress in 1970 to insure credit union member deposits up to the $250,000 federal limit. It functions through the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) and is backed by the “full faith and credit” of the United States government.

The NCUSIF maintains at or near 1.30 percent of federally insured credit union deposits. By law, federally insured credit unions (like Nutmeg) must keep one percent of their deposits in the NCUSIF—or more, if the NCUA board chooses to levy a premium. By keeping the NCUSIF healthy with deposits, credit unions only experienced one premium in 1992 when three large New England institutions failed.

No federal tax dollars have ever been placed in the fund and no member has ever lost money insured by the NCUSIF.

The Short Version: Your money will be safe and insured at Nutmeg with the help of The National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund.
